McHenry CHIROPRACTIC TIP OF THE MONTH: Exercise the Quadratus Lumborum

The quadratus lumborum – a quadrilateral-shaped muscle - is a paired muscle on the left and right side of the abdominal wall. It’s a deep muscle and typically thought of as a back muscle as it extends from the 12th rib to the upper 4 lumbar vertebrae. When contracted, the quadratus lumborum causes lateral flexion of the lumbar spine and/or rise of the pelvis. (5) Various bridge-type exercises are being examined about the way in which they strengthen the quadratus lumborum’s two layers of muscle in order for it to best add to the motor control of the lumbar pain and avert back pain. (6) OrthoIllinois Chiropractic and you can talk about how your spine may benefit from such exercise at your next McHenry chiropractic visit to OrthoIllinois Chiropractic.
