Could a Plant Compound Work Protect Your Intervertebral Discs?
If you've ever had disc-related back pain or neck pain, you know how critical healthy spinal discs are to feeling comfortable through your day. Now, encouraging new research is examining a natural substance called quercetin — found in foods like apples, onions, and berries — and its potential to reduce the pace of disc degeneration at the cellular level.
WHAT IS QUERCETIN?
Quercetin is a plant pigment known as a flavonoid. It's already well-regarded for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, but two studies published in 2026 dove further into how it may directly support the health of your spinal discs.
WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND
The first study, published in Tissue & Cell, found that quercetin helps protect nucleus pulposus cells — the shock-absorbing cells at the center of each spinal disc that act as your body's natural shock absorbers. (1) Researchers discovered that quercetin works by reducing a specific inflammatory pathway and enhancing a cellular "clean-up" process called mitochondrial autophagy. In plain language, this helps disc cells clear out damaged parts and function better, which may help delay the degeneration process.
The second study, published in the Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, took a different view. (2) Using sophisticated genetic analysis, researchers pinpointed that fibrosis — a kind of fibrous buildup — in nucleus pulposus cells plays a key role in disc degeneration. They discovered that quercetin appears effective as an antifibrotic agent, meaning it may help hinder this scarring process from worsening.
WHY THIS MATTERS TO OUR PATIENTS
While more research is needed before quercetin becomes a regular part of disc care, these findings contribute to a increasing body of evidence that nutrition and natural compounds can contribute a supportive role alongside gentle, non-surgical spinal care like chiropractic treatment. At OrthoIllinois Chiropractic, we believe in a whole-person approach to spinal health — combining hands-on chiropractic care with everyday life activities that support your body's innate healing.
