McHenry Mediterranean Diet Lowers Risk Of Cognitive Decline, Osteoporosis & Fracture Risk
Thoughts of the Mediterranean bring postcard-worthy images of beautiful blue ocean waters, sandy beaches, clear blue skies…and food? Yes, food! OrthoIllinois Chiropractic presents nutrition tips, and the Mediterranean diet is bantered around the nutrition world for its many health benefits as well it should in our chiropractic world, too. Fish, fruits, and veggies are good for all of us in our McHenry chiropractic family!
BENEFITS OF MEDITERRANEAN DIET
With the expanding recognition that diet offers a valuable role in health and prevention of disease issues like osteoporosis, bone loss, etc., guidelines are being discussed. A new paper with suggestions for guidelines endorsed a mediterranean-type diet with daily consumption of 2 to 3 dairy products to deliver calcium and protein adequate enough to maintain normal calcium-phosphorous balance and bone metabolism all of which are linked to a decreased risk of fracture. (1) In other papers, the Mediterranean diet has been said to reduce hip fracture risk. Another new paper states that there is evidence that a modified or alternative Mediterranean diet like the DASH (“Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension”) diet may also decrease hip fracture risk as well as threat of lumbar spine osteoporosis in women. (2) A study just released this past month pointed out that older adults who followed the Meditterranean Diet more strictly had lower odds of developing cognitive decline. (3) Better BMD, reduced osteoporosis odds, reduced probability of cognitive decline and hip fracture may be inspiring to try and follow the Mediterranean diet, yes? OrthoIllinois Chiropractic finds these new studies interesting enough to share with our McHenry chiropractic patients and their families.
WHAT DO I EAT ON THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET?
What foods are in the mediterranean diet? Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, seeds), yogurt, seafood/fish, a little red wine, and lots of water, un-sugared sparkling water, juices. It suggests avoiding sugars, refined grains, ultra-processed foods, etc. (4) These are all possible if not simple!
